GDCH, Mumbai: Better Teeth, Brighter Minds: Rehabilitative Care at David Sassoon School
On 17 February 2026, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, conducted a specialized Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp at the David Sassoon School, Matunga Road. This initiative is a vital pillar of our World Oral Health Day 2026 mission: “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life.” The program aimed to promote oral health awareness and preventive dental care among children in a supportive and rehabilitative environment.
Target Population
Children and youth currently residing at the David Sassoon Industrial School, an institution dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of children affected by neglect and domestic challenges.
Number of Beneficiaries
65 students received comprehensive clinical screenings and restorative hygiene education.
Rationale
Health equity means ensuring that children in rehabilitative care receive the same standard of preventive dentistry as any other student. The David Sassoon Industrial School, originally established as a juvenile reformatory, now functions as a rehabilitative and educational institution under the Children’s Aid Society. Founded in 1927 as a government initiative, the institution continues its mission to protect and support children affected by neglect, exploitation, trafficking, and domestic challenges. Children in such environments often have a history of inconsistent healthcare access, making them highly vulnerable to untreated dental decay and gum disease.
Objectives
- Promote awareness about preventive oral healthcare among school children
- Encourage adoption of correct tooth-brushing techniques and healthy dietary practices
- Identify early signs of oral diseases through oral health screening
Activities Conducted
The camp was structured to be supportive, educational, and clinically thorough:
1. Interactive Oral Health Education for Students
An engaging oral health awareness session was conducted using interactive discussions and demonstrations focusing on:
- Importance of oral hygiene and healthy habits
- Correct tooth-brushing techniques
- Harmful effects of tobacco and substance abuse
- Prevention of dental caries and gum diseases
- Golden Rules of maintaining proper oral health
2. Clinical Oral Health Screening
A systematic intra-oral examination was conducted for all 65 students to evaluate:
- Screening for tooth decay to prevent future pain or infection.
- Assessing for gingival inflammation and the presence of dental plaque.
- Ensuring no underlying soft-tissue pathologies were present.
Impact
This outreach at David Sassoon School has successfully integrated oral health into the rehabilitative journey of these children. The initiative emphasized the importance of preventive care at an early age, helping to instill healthy habits and awareness, thereby contributing to the overall well-being and development of the children.
Conclusion
The “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life” initiative at David Sassoon School proves that Better Teeth truly lead to Brighter Minds. The Department of Public Health Dentistry remains dedicated to reaching every child in Mumbai, especially those in the most challenging circumstances, to ensure their smiles are never left behind.
