Rationale

Children living in urban slum environments are often exposed to conditions that increase their risk of oral diseases, including limited access to healthcare services, inadequate awareness, and poor oral hygiene practices. Addressing these disparities requires targeted, compassionate, and community-based interventions. The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, conducted an Oral Health Screening, Education, and Prevention Camp on 18 April 2026 at Siddharth Colony, Kurla/Chembur. 

 

Objectives

  • To provide oral health screening services for children in underserved communities 
  • To promote preventive oral hygiene practices through education and demonstration 
  • To encourage early adoption of healthy oral habits 
  • To facilitate early detection of dental conditions 
  • To deliver care through a compassion-driven, community-oriented approach 

 

Target Population

  • Children residing in urban slum areas 
  • Underserved and high-risk pediatric population 

 

Core Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Education Sessions

  • Interactive and child-friendly sessions conducted 
  • Focus on: 
    • Importance of oral hygiene 
    • Prevention of dental diseases 
    • Healthy dietary practices 

 

2. Mass and Individual Toothbrushing Demonstration

  • Demonstration of correct brushing techniques using models 
  • Group demonstrations followed by individual guidance 
  • Emphasis on proper technique, frequency, and duration 
  • Encouraged active participation by children 

 

3. Oral Health Screening

  • Comprehensive oral examinations conducted 
  • Assessment of: 
    • Dental caries 
    • Oral hygiene status 
    • Gum health 
  • Identification and referral of children requiring further care 

 

Conclusion

The Oral Health Screening, Education, and Prevention Camp at Siddhart Colony successfully demonstrated the power of care-driven outreach combined with preventive education. Through meaningful engagement and early intervention, the initiative aligns with the vision,
