GDCH, Mumbai: Empowering Communities Through Awareness- Oral Health Awareness Program

Rationale

Promoting oral health awareness is a cornerstone of preventive healthcare, particularly in communities where access to reliable health information is limited. Education-driven initiatives have the potential to create lasting behavioural change and reduce the burden of oral diseases. In alignment with the global theme “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life,” the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, conducted an Oral Health Awareness Program on 25 March 2026 at Vision Rescue Community Centre, Kalwa, Thane. The initiative aimed to promote awareness, preventive oral healthcare practices, and self-responsibility among patients and community members through education and engagement activities.

Objectives

  • To create awareness regarding oral hygiene and preventive dental care
  • To promote self-oral healthcare practices
  • To encourage healthy lifestyle habits for better oral and overall health
  • To engage the community through oral health pledge-taking

Target Population

  • Patients and beneficiaries at Vision Rescue
  • General community members
  • Individuals from underserved populations

Total No of Beneficiaries: 150

Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Awareness Program

An educational session was conducted focusing on:

  • Importance of maintaining oral hygiene
  • Correct brushing techniques
  • Role of diet in oral health
  • Prevention of common dental diseases
  • Importance of regular dental check-ups

2. Oral Health Pledge for Self-Care

Participants actively took an Oral Health Pledge, committing to:

  • Brushing twice daily
  • Maintaining good oral hygiene practices
  • Adopting preventive oral health behaviors

This outreach activity highlights the role of community-based awareness programs in promoting preventive oral healthcare, especially among underserved populations. By focusing on education and empowerment, the initiative contributes towards building a health-conscious and informed community.

Conclusion

The program successfully reinforced that awareness is the first step towards prevention and better health outcomes. Through continued outreach efforts, the Department remains committed to: “Reaching Every Smile through Awareness and Action.”
