GDCH, Mumbai: Healthy Smiles Start with Good Habits – Chembur Early Childhood Outreach

Rationale:

Early childhood is a critical period for establishing lifelong oral hygiene habits. Preventive interventions at this stage play a vital role in reducing the risk of dental diseases and promoting overall health and well-being. In alignment with the global initiative theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life”, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, conducted a specialized Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp at Shiv Hanuman Mandir, Vishnu Nagar, Chembur. The initiative focused on early childhood oral health promotion, emphasizing habit formation, parental awareness, and preventive care.

Objectives

  • To introduce basic oral hygiene practices among preschool children
  • To promote early childhood oral health awareness among caregivers
  • To facilitate screening for common dental conditions in children
  • To encourage healthy dietary and hygiene habits from an early age

Target Population

The programme specifically catered to:

  • Anganwadi students (preschool children)
  • Parents and caregivers within the Vishnu Nagar community

Number of Beneficiaries

A total of 86 children participated in the screening and oral health orientation programme.

Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Screening for Children

Basic oral examinations were conducted to assess:

  • Early childhood caries
  • Oral hygiene status
  • Presence of plaque and initial dental issues

Children requiring further care were guided and referred to Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai.

2. Interactive Oral Health Education

Age-appropriate and engaging educational sessions were conducted for children using:

  • Demonstrations of correct tooth brushing techniques
  • Visual aids and models
  • Simple, child-friendly instructions on oral hygiene

The sessions emphasized learning through interaction and demonstration.

3. Parental and Caregiver Awareness

Parents and caregivers were educated on:

  • Importance of primary teeth
  • Role of diet in preventing dental caries
  • Supervised brushing for children
  • Need for early and regular dental visits

This component highlighted the critical role of caregivers in shaping children’s oral health behaviors.

Conclusion

The “Healthy Smiles Start with Good Habits” outreach at Chembur successfully emphasized the significance of early childhood oral health and preventive care. By combining screening, interactive education, and caregiver involvement, the programme contributed to building a strong foundation for lifelong oral health. Aligned with the vision of the FDI World Dental Federation, the initiative reinforces: “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life—Instilling Healthy Habits from the Start.”
