GDCH, Mumbai: Little Steps to Healthy Smiles- Oral Health Screening and Education Camp
The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai, successfully organized an Oral Health Screening and Education Camp on 19 January 2026 for the children of ICDS Anganwadi Centres in Bhandup West, Mumbai. The program aimed to promote early oral health awareness and preventive dental care among young children.
Target Population
Preschool-aged children and their caregivers from Anganwadi centers 179, 184, 186, and 190.
Number of Beneficiaries
98 young learners were screened and guided toward better oral health habits.
Rationale
Great health begins with "Little Steps." Unfortunately, early childhood decay is often overlooked until it causes severe pain. By bringing the team to the Maharashtra Nagar Anganwadi cluster, the goal was to shift the community's focus toward preventive care, ensuring that these children enter primary school with healthy, pain-free smiles and the knowledge to keep them that way.
Objectives
- Perform early-stage clinical screening to identify and intercept decay before it progresses.
- Normalize dental visits for children through a friendly, "fear-free" approach.
- Educate through play, teaching the basic mechanics of brushing and oral rinsing.
- Support Anganwadi workers in maintaining a "dental-friendly" environment for their students.
Activities Conducted
The camp was designed to be gentle, interactive, and highly visual for the children:
1. Interactive Education & Storytelling
- Using colorful dental models and puppets, our team demonstrated the "circular" brushing motion, making the habit feel like a game rather than a chore.
- "Good Food, Strong Teeth": An interactive session identifying tooth-friendly foods (like fruits and vegetables) versus those that cause "sugar bugs" (like sticky candies).
2. Comprehensive Clinical Screening
A total of 98 children underwent systematic examinations to evaluate:
- Caries Detection: Identifying early "white-spot" lesions that can be managed with fluoride.
- Gingival Health: Checking for early signs of inflammation.
- Oral Hygiene Status: Assessing the effectiveness of current home-care practices.
3. Caregiver Counselling & Referral
Parents and Anganwadi staff were briefed on the importance of supervised brushing. Children requiring restorative care were referred to the Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, with clear instructions for their guardians.
Impact
This outreach at Maharashtra Nagar has strengthened the foundations of community health in Bhandup.
- 98 children were empowered with the skills to prevent future dental emergencies.
- By covering four Anganwadi centers at once, a unified standard of dental awareness across the neighborhood was created.
- Identified several asymptomatic cases which were referred to the Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, allowing for "micro-invasive" treatment rather than complex extractions later.
Conclusion
The “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life” initiative in Maharashtra Nagar proves that small interventions today lead to big smiles tomorrow. By focusing on these "Little Steps," the Department of Public Health Dentistry is ensuring a brighter, healthier future for Mumbai's children.
