GDCH, Mumbai: Prevention, Early Detection, and Empowerment- Oral Precancer & Cancer Awareness Initiative
The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, conducted a comprehensive outreach activity at Padma Nagar Road, Govandi East on 24/03/2026. The program focused on screening, awareness, and early detection, particularly addressing the growing burden of oral precancer and cancer in the community. Through this initiative, the department reinforced its commitment to community-based preventive care, early diagnosis, and health promotion.
Rationale:
Oral cancer and precancerous conditions represent a significant public health challenge, particularly among underserved populations with high prevalence of risk factors such as tobacco use. Early detection and timely intervention are critical in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions. The program emphasized prevention, early detection, and community empowerment, aiming to address the growing burden of oral precancer and cancer through integrated community-based interventions.
Objectives
- To facilitate early detection of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions
- To raise awareness regarding risk factors, especially tobacco use
- To promote preventive oral health practices
- To encourage timely diagnosis and treatment-seeking behaviour
- To empower the community through education and self-care commitment
Target Population
The outreach activity catered to a diverse urban community, including:
- General adult population
- Individuals with tobacco use habits (high-risk group)
- Residents of underserved communities
- Adolescents and young adults
Special emphasis was placed on screening high-risk individuals for oral potentially malignant disorders.
Activities Conducted:
1. Oral Health Screening Camp
A structured screening programme was conducted to assess:
- Dental caries and periodontal diseases
- Oral mucosal lesions
- Early signs of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer
Individuals identified with suspicious lesions were counselled and referred to Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, for further evaluation and management.
2. Oral Precancer & Cancer Awareness Initiative
Focused awareness sessions were conducted highlighting:
- Identification of major risk factors, particularly tobacco use
- Recognition of early warning signs of oral cancer
- Importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention
This component emphasized life-saving awareness and risk reduction strategies.
3. Community Awareness Program
Interactive educational sessions were conducted covering:
- Daily oral hygiene practices
- Correct tooth brushing techniques
- Role of diet and nutrition in oral health
- Preventive strategies for maintaining oral hygiene

4. Oral Health Pledge – Self-Care Commitment
Participants actively engaged in a Self-Oral Health Care Pledge, committing to:
- Maintain regular oral hygiene practices

- Seek timely dental care
This initiative promoted behavioural change and personal responsibility towards oral health.
