Rationale

Oral health awareness forms an essential component of preventive healthcare, particularly in underserved communities where access to accurate health information and services remains limited. Community-based educational initiatives play a crucial role in fostering sustainable behavioral change and reducing the long-term burden of oral diseases. In alignment with the global message, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life”, an Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp was conducted at Vision Rescue Community Centre, Govandi, Mumbai. The initiative focused on strengthening awareness, encouraging preventive practices, and promoting individual responsibility for oral health through interactive and participatory activities.

 

Objectives

  • To enhance awareness regarding oral hygiene and preventive dental care 
  • To encourage adoption of self oral healthcare practices 
  • To promote healthy lifestyle behaviors for improved oral and general health 
  • To engage the community through oral health pledge-taking and active participation 

 

Target Population

The program catered to:

  • Beneficiaries and patients at Vision Rescue 
  • Members of the general community 
  • Individuals from underserved and vulnerable population groups 

 

Total no of Beneficiaries: 150

 

Activities Conducted

1. Oral Health Education and Awareness Session

A structured and interactive educational session was conducted, covering:

  • Importance of maintaining oral hygiene 
  • Demonstration of correct tooth brushing techniques 
  • Role of diet and nutrition in oral health 
  • Prevention of common dental diseases 
  • Importance of regular dental visits and early care 

The session emphasized practical, easy-to-follow steps for maintaining good oral health in daily life.

 

2. Oral Health Screening

Basic oral examinations were carried out to identify:

  • Dental caries 
  • Periodontal conditions 
  • Oral hygiene status 

Participants requiring further care were guided for appropriate follow-up and management.

 

3. Self-Oral Health Care Pledge

Participants actively engaged in a pledge-taking activity, committing to:

  • Brush teeth twice daily 
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene 
  • Adopt preventive oral health practices 
  • Take responsibility for their own oral health 

This component reinforced behavioral commitment and long-term habit formation.

Conclusion

The Oral Health Awareness and Screening Camp at Vision Rescue Community Centre successfully demonstrated the importance of education-driven preventive healthcare initiatives. By empowering individuals with knowledge and encouraging commitment through pledge-taking, the programme laid a strong foundation for sustained oral health practices.
