NOHP Puducherry - One-Month School Dental Health Awareness and Screening Camp by Mobile Dental Unit (September)

School visit

The National Oral Health Program (NOHP), Puducherry, successfully conducted a one-month School Dental Health Awareness and Screening Camp across various schools in the region using a fully equipped Mobile Dental Unit. This initiative aimed to promote oral health awareness, early detection of dental problems, and preventive care among school children.
The program covered both urban and rural areas of Puducherry, ensuring accessibility to quality dental services for children who may otherwise have limited access to oral healthcare. The Mobile Dental Unit was staffed by a team of dental surgeons, hygienists, and support personnel who worked systematically to deliver comprehensive services.

Objectives of the Program:
1. To create awareness about the importance of oral hygiene among school children
2. To identify common dental problems at an early stage
3. To provide basic preventive and curative dental services
4. To instill healthy oral hygiene habits in children

Activities Conducted:
Oral Health Education Sessions:
Interactive sessions were conducted using audiovisual aids, models, and demonstrations. Students were educated on proper brushing techniques, the importance of a balanced diet, and the prevention of dental diseases such as dental caries and gum problems.

Dental Screening:
Each child underwent a detailed oral examination inside the Mobile Dental Unit. Dental records were maintained, and individual reports were provided, highlighting any existing dental issues.

Referral Services:
Children requiring advanced dental treatment were referred to nearby government dental facilities for further management.

Distribution of IEC Materials:
Informational pamphlets and oral hygiene kits were distributed to reinforce the importance of daily dental care.

Impact of the Program:
The one-month initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from schools, teachers, and students. A large number of children benefited from the screenings and awareness sessions. The program significantly improved knowledge about oral health and encouraged positive behavioral changes among students.

Conclusion:
The School Dental Health Awareness and Screening Camp demonstrated the effectiveness of mobile dental services in reaching underserved populations. By bringing dental care directly to schools, the program not only addressed immediate oral health needs but also laid a strong foundation for lifelong healthy habits among children. Such initiatives play a crucial role in building a healthier future generation with improved oral health outcomes.
