The 8020 Campaign for Oral Health @ Beijing, NAOC with PKU Hospital of Stomatology

Lecture

On March 20, 2024, World Oral Health Day, the Graduate Student Union of the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) collaborated with Dr. Gong Xi from Peking University Hospital of Stomatology to present a public lecture about "The 8020 Campaign for Oral Health." This campaign advocates for retaining 20 or more natural teeth until the age of 80, promoting lifelong oral health.

We recognize that tooth loss remains a significant issue among middle-aged and elderly individuals in China. Among the elderly population aged 80 and above, less than 20% possess 20 teeth. In the 35-44 age group, the periodontal health rate is only 14.5%, while the tooth loss rate reaches 37%. Similarly, the 65-74 age group has an average of 13.33 decayed teeth per person.

Oral health is closely related to our overall well-being. Unhealthy oral conditions not only cause tooth pain but can also lead to abnormal chewing and biting, and affect eating and digestion. Additionally, oral diseases are closely linked to various systemic conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Therefore, raising public awareness that "A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy Body" is crucial. That is why we held this activity on the World Oral Health Day.

During the lecture, Dr. Gong elucidated several essential aspects of maintaining oral health, including proper toothbrushing techniques and frequency, selection of appropriate toothbrushes and toothpaste, and effective use of dental floss. Then for a healthy lifestyle, people should notice the avoidance of smoking, alcohol, and betel nut consumption, and the reduction of high-sugar food intake are also crucial. Finally, regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and gum treatments are non-negligible.

The presentation garnered enthusiastic engagement from the staff and students of NAOC and other institutions nearby, who actively participated in discussions on oral health. The audience posed many interesting and practical questions, such as whether one should brush his/her teeth after drinking cola, whether children experience delayed tooth replacement at age 7, or whether dental implants carry significant risks. Dr. Gong provided professional and detailed answers. Attendees also received dental care kits, including toothbrushes and dental floss, further promoting oral health awareness.

This impactful event effectively shared essential oral hygiene knowledge within the academic community at CAS, reinforcing our dedication to the 8020 campaign. Moving forward, we aim to expand our outreach, and meanwhile, Dr. Gong intends to create several short videos and share them online, educating a wider audience and promoting improved oral health across the Chinese population.
